Kid Friendly Hikes in Steamboat Springs

If you are looking to get out in nature in Steamboat Springs the options can be overwhelming. Here are a few favorites that provide beautiful views and can be tailored to all ages and abilities.
This 7.5-mile trail is mostly flat and follows the Yampa River through Steamboat Springs. It’s paved, making it suitable for strollers, and there are numerous parks and playgrounds along the way where kids can play. A map of the trail can be found here. This hike can be done in all seasons.
For a shorter hike with a great payoff, take the 1/4-mile trail to the bridge at the lower falls. It’s a relatively easy walk to a spectacular 280-foot waterfall. There’s also a longer 2.5-mile trail to the upper falls for older children who are more comfortable with hiking. This hike can be done in all seasons, but in the winter you may need snowshoes if you go past the bridge.
Spring Creek Trail
This trail is friendly for all ages, with the option to go as short or far as you’d like. The beginning of the trail is gentle and relatively flat, with a stream and beautiful wildflowers during the summer. These trails are dog friendly, and you will occasionally see moose, deer or bears, so keep your eyes open! It’s an accessible and appealing hike for all ages, and the gentle gradient makes it suitable for younger children or those new to hiking. This hike can be done in all seasons, but you will want suitable boots if you do it in the winter.
You can pick up the trail at two places in town:
- Park in the parking lot at 3rd Street and 1st Creek Fall Road. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the trail.
- Park at the Spring Creek Trailhead and walk up the wide dirt road.
Located on the Steamboat Ski Resort, the Thunderhead Trail offers a 3.8-mile hike that’s suitable for families. You can hike up and enjoy scenic views, and in the summer, you may have the option to ride the gondola back down (be sure to check for operating times). You will need to buy a pass or have an Ikon pass to ride the gondola up. This hike is summer only, though there are other winter snowshoeing options at the mountain.
Stehley Park
Situated near Downtown Steamboat Springs, Stehley Park is a great spot for families, offering a picnic area, a stream to splash in and beautiful green space. Once you cross the bridge you can walk out and back on the wide and partially shaded Butcher Knife Canyon Trail (the name is much more aggressive than the trail!). This trail is suitable for all seasons.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a more extended hike, these trails provide flexibility for all ages. Make sure you have shoes, clothing, food and water appropriate for season and the amount of time you plan to be outside.
