4:00 p.m. — Arts Depot stop
Head to the historic Depot Art Center along the Yampa River. Local artists often have seasonal shows, and kids usually enjoy seeing the mix of paintings, pottery, and sculptures in this quirky converted train depot. There’s also the West Lincoln Park Playground across the bridge!
6:00 p.m. — Dinner at Back Door Grill
Whether you’re craving comfort food or just want a laid-back spot to fuel the family, Back Door Grill is a dependable spot. Located right in the heart of Steamboat at 825 Oak Street, they offer indoor and outdoor seating. The kids menu is excellent, and the kiddos can add their decorated dollar bills to the wall while you enjoy a cool beverage.
Saturday
6:30 a.m. — Rise early for a hot air balloon ride (ages 6+)

2:00 p.m. — Culture break: Art + History
Learn some local history at these great museums in town. There are lots of hands-on activities for the kids.
- Steamboat Art Museum (rotating Western + wildlife exhibits, kid-doable).
- Tread of Pioneers Museum (hands-on history, scavenger hunts, ski heritage).
5:00pm — Dinner downtown
There are lots of great dining locations on Lincoln and Yampa. If you start your meal early there are often happy-hour and mud-season specials to be had! Some of our favorites are Primrose, Mambo and Vaqueros. Pro-tip: Make a reservation ahead of time!
- Primrose – An upscale but welcoming spot where locally sourced ingredients shine in creative, seasonal dishes.
- Mambo – A lively Italian favorite serving handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and a bustling family-friendly vibe.
- Vaqueros – Right on Lincoln Avenue, this go-to Mexican restaurant pairs generous plates and margaritas with a relaxed atmosphere.
Sunday
8:00 a.m. — Morning hike
Suggest options:
- Spring Creek Trail for an out-and-back stroll through the Aspen trees. It is stroller-friendly in the lower section. As you head up the trail it narrows and follows the burbling Spring Creek. There’s lots for kids to explore!
- Fish Creek Falls It’s a short walk on an easy trail to the rushing waterfall. As of 2025, the bridge is closed for repairs, but there are other paved paths in the area that will lead you up a trail so you can view the falls from above!
- Yampa River Core Trail is perfect for a flat, easy stroll with bikes or scooters. It’s paved, and has easy access to the river. There are also some playgrounds and open fields along the way!
- Buffalo Pass (or Buff Pass) is a beautiful drive through golden aspens and sweeping mountain views, making it one of Steamboat’s best leaf-peeping routes in the fall. The Dry Lake parking area is a popular spot to start, with restrooms and access to several easy walking trails. It’s a great place for kids to stretch their legs, collect leaves, and explore without committing to a long hike.
11:00 a.m. — Cozy brunch
- Winona’s has legendary cinnamon rolls and hearty breakfasts.
- Seedz Café has healthy options with great coffee.
- The Egg is a classic, with hearty breakfasts and a great kids menu.
2:00 p.m. — Pack up with fall vibes
