Nature, Confidence, and Connection: The Valuable Impact of Outdoor Summer Camps

It’s no secret that Routt County, CO offers stunning scenery and countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. Families here value sharing these experiences and getting their kids outside. We’re also fortunate to have organizations in our community that help children connect with nature. As our lives become more chaotic and tech-driven, embracing the outdoors is more important than ever — especially for our youth.

Yampatika’s Summer Camps are designed to encourage children to explore the outdoors and foster a deeper connection with nature — something proven to support personal growth and development. Time spent in nature can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, making these programs especially valuable for youth navigating emotional challenges. The blend of physical activity, fresh air, and calming surroundings has a powerful effect on mental well-being.

Through immersive experiences like hiking, investigating, camping, and team-building, campers develop resilience, self-confidence, and a stronger appreciation for the natural world. The challenges they face push them beyond their comfort zones, leading to personal growth and a lasting sense of accomplishment.

Parents have shared powerful feedback:

“My kids love the outdoors and learning about their environment. After attending Yampatika, both showed major confidence boosts. Our son, in particular, came back more curious and self-assured.”

“Yampatika gave our kids the chance to adapt to new environments and make new friends — it was amazing to see.”

“I loved that my child came home talking about the environment and what he was learning outside the traditional classroom.”

Yampatika’s new camp program, the Wilderness Rangers, is a backpacking experience for kids ages 12, 13 and 14. This immersive wilderness program takes things a step further by offering deeper opportunities for personal development. As participants navigate outdoor challenges, they build lasting friendships, learn teamwork, and develop a strong sense of responsibility and accountability. The shared experience of being in nature fosters a supportive, collaborative environment where young people can express themselves, connect with others, and grow emotionally and socially.

At Yampatika, we believe the most impactful programs are rooted in relationships — with one another and with the natural world. Our goal is to build threefold connections in every program:

  1. Positive relationships with our participants.
  2. Positive relationships between participants.
  3. Positive relationships with nature.

When kids understand their connection to the environment and the people around them, they’re more likely to act in ways that care for our shared world.
