Introducing “Sky Slumber” — The Overnight Gondola Experience for Families

The most coveted sleepover in the Yampa Valley… is 40 feet off the ground. 🚠

Imagine this: the mountain goes quiet, the last skier has carved down to the base, and your family is still up there — tucked into cozy sleeping bags, watching the alpenglow fade over the Flat Tops while a snack tray sits between you. No bedtime battles. No one asking for a glass of water. Just stars, silence, and the gentle sway of a gondola cabin somewhere between Gondola Square and Thunderhead Lodge.

Steamboat Ski Resort has officially announced Sky Slumber — a limited overnight gondola experience designed for families.

Here’s how it works. Families board a specially outfitted gondola cabin at dusk, with insulated sleeping pads and premium sleeping bags already laid out (yes, they’re rated for mountain temps). Gonda LaVista, the resort’s inaugural Sleep Concierge, helps get everyone settled and answers the all-important question: what’s for snacks? The answer is a rotating tray of local favorites — hot cocoa, trail mix, and s’mores bites.

“People ski Heavenly Daze all day and never really see it,” said LaVista. “But hang over it in a gondola cabin at sunset, sleeping bag around your shoulders, hot cocoa in hand — that’s when it actually lives up to its name.”

The pilot program is limited to ten gondola cabins per night, with priority booking for families with kids ages 5–12. Each cabin sleeps up to four and comes fully equipped:

  • Premium 20°F-rated sleeping bags, insulated pads, and pillows
  • Sunset and sunrise snack service from gondola attendants
  • Cozy string-light ambiance inside the cabin
  • Snacks and hot beverages available for any midnight munchies

Bookings open April 1, 2026. Don’t wait — these will go fast.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How does the bathroom situation work? The gondola runs continuously through the night, so guests can hop off at Thunderhead Lodge, use the facilities, and board the next Sky Slumber cabin on its way back around. We also strongly recommend a pre-boarding stop at the base lodge. You know your kids.

What snacks are included? Each cabin receives a sunset tray and a sunrise tray. Sunset includes hot cocoa, trail mix, and s’mores bites. Sunrise brings pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee — because the adults need it.

What sleeping bags are provided? Sky Slumber uses 20°F-rated mummy-style bags with a flannel liner — warm enough for a spring mountain night without taking over the cabin. Sleeping pads and pillows are included. You just show up.

How many people fit in a cabin? Up to four guests per cabin. We recommend two adults and two kids, though the configuration of one exhausted parent and three very excited children has apparently been field-tested.

What are the boarding and offload times? Boarding begins at 7:00 p.m. to catch the sunset. Offload is at 7:00 a.m. — just as ski patrol heads up and the mountain comes back to life. Not a bad alarm clock.

Can we bring our own gear? The cabin is fully outfitted, so there’s no need — and honestly, not much room. That said, one stuffie per child is strongly encouraged.

Happy April Fools’ Day! 🎉

Sky Slumber is, unfortunately, not a real program. The gondola does not offer overnight stays, and no Sleep Concierge named Gonda LaVista exists — that we know of. We’re sorry. We really wanted this to be true too.

But here’s the part that IS real: if your kid is begging for a genuinely epic sleepover, Yampa Valley Baby Gear Rentals has you covered. Katy and her team deliver and set up slumber party tents right to your home or vacation rental — no gondola required! ⛺
